Cruiser and Standard

Years ago, motorcycles were built as "do-it-all" bikes to appeal to more riders. Today, there is a much bigger market for motorcycles, and technological advances have made it possible for manufacturers to make bikes for specific uses. A regular bike is now called a "standard." Cruisers are popular for a few different reasons. They look good and are built tough, while they are designed to be easy to ride.

Both standards and cruisers are suitable for beginner riders. Most cruisers and standards come with various engine sizes, from 250cc to 1,200cc or higher. Beginner riders should probably go for a bike that doesn't exceed 1,200cc to give them a simple ride to get to work or other places around town but still have open road capabilities.

Another type of motorcycle that offers many features but is also used in this way is touring bikes. Touring bikes are also called "dressers" because they are all dressed up with options. These options offer you some of the comforts that are often found in a car.

Sport and Dual-Sport or ADV Bikes

Sportbikes are built for speed, and Dual-sport bikes have both on and off-road capabilities. Sportbikes are made for those thrill-seekers. They pack a lot of power into a relatively small engine, some reaching up to 200 horsepower and speeds of 200mph. Manufacturers are now building these bikes with engine sizes from 300cc to 600cc.

Dual-sport bikes are for adventurers and are also known as ADV bikes. With engine sizes ranging from 250cc to 1.200cc, they will allow you to go off course. They are great for beginners, as they are tough, lightweight, fuel-efficient, and most of all, fun to ride. Dirt bikes are also fun but usually are not meant for pavement riding.

Whichever bike you choose, make sure that you seek training for that particular bike and learn what gear is needed to keep you safe while riding.
