Whether you’re looking for an efficient way to commute or feel a need for speed, chances are you’re looking for a motorcycle. These compact powerhouses come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and most importantly, types, and it can be overwhelming to try and sort through it all.

We here at Moroney’s Motorsports want to help you land the perfect ride, so we’ve put together a brief description of the various types of motorcycles to help you find the one that fits you best. Sport Bikes

For those whose primary goals are thrilling rides, fast-paced adventures, and a sleek look, there’s nothing better than a sport bike. The sprinters of the motorcycle family, these machines prioritize acceleration, speed potential, and performance in general. Riders will typically sit leaned forward, and high footpegs bring the legs up close to the body. This helps stabilize the center of gravity and improve aerodynamics. The sleek shape and low ground clearance further improve aerodynamics as well.

Touring Motorcycles

If you’re looking for more of a cross-country runner than a sprinter, so to speak, then you might need a touring motorcycle. These bulked-up bikes are wider and designed for long-distance “touring” trips with the storage capacity, fuel efficiency, power, and comfort features needed to make it an easy ride. Windshields reduce wind fatigue, broad frames and tires improve stability, and better seating keeps you fresh no matter how many state borders you cross.

Cruisers

That said, there’s plenty of middle ground to love in terms of motorcycle looks and capabilities, and most of that is taken up by the cruiser motorcycles. When you picture a motorcycle, these bikes are probably what you imagine, styled after the motorcycle golden age of the 50s and 60s. These also have subclasses, offering further options for you to explore.

Choppers

The extended front fork, ape-hanger handlebars, and “chopped-down” aesthetic make choppers some of the most iconic-looking motorcycles. The features that distinguish them also make them a bit challenging to control for beginners, but veteran riders and mechanics love them for their customizability.

Power Cruisers

These cruisers lean a bit more towards the sport bike end of the spectrum. As the name implies, they’re a beefed-up version of the standard cruiser with a larger and more modern chassis, more modern technologies, and more power and performance.

Dirt Bikes

Of course, if you want off-road adventures, you need a dirt bike. Slimmer, much lighter, and with lower power potentials than street-legal bikes, off-road motorcycles are built to navigate and survive the rigors of natural terrains.

Dual Sport & Adventure

For a bike that can do a bit of both, dual sport bikes are built to handle the streets at lower speeds but focus mainly on off-road capabilities. Adventure bikes are the opposite, primarily designed for street riding but able to handle lower-difficulty off-road settings.
