Your all-terrain vehicle, or ATV, does exactly what its name suggests—it can handle just about any terrain, any time. But as tough and powerful as these machines are, they’re still machines, meaning they rely on you to keep them in good repair. We here at Moroney’s Motorsports want to help you maximize your uptime and minimize time and money spent on serious repairs, so we’ve put together a couple of tips on caring for your ATV, below. Battery

If the battery in your ATV isn’t charged or otherwise in good shape, you won’t be able to start the engine at all. The best care here is preventative—inspect the battery posts, the metal parts on your battery connecting it to the engine, every month or so. Make sure they’re clean.

When temperatures approach freezing, it’s also best to remove the battery entirely. Put it on a tender or trickle charger, which will keep it active and prevent it from dying entirely, which they tend to do in cold weather.

Tires

You’ll want to check the tire pressure before and after every ride to ensure it matches the manufacturer recommendations, found in your owner’s manual. Too much pressure can lower traction and lead to blowouts. Too little pressure will strain your engine and can lead to punctures, as well.

You should also check your tread level regularly to make sure it also matches manufacturer recommendations. The tread will wear down over time, so you’ll have to change your tires eventually, but excessive or uneven wear can indicate a much larger issue.
